Hindu God - Lord Ganesha

by V.A.Ponmelil  (Feedback)

Lord Ganesha is a unique Hindu deity in the human form with the head of an elephant. He is believed to be the power of the Supreme Being which removes the obstacles and ensures success in human endeavors. So every worldly activity starts with the worshipping of this god.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha is the first son of Lord Shiva and the Divine Mother Parvati. His large elephant head symbolizes wisdom, understanding and discriminating intellect which one must possess for perfect being.

The natural human desire to enjoy life is represented by the wide mouth. The large ears signify the capacity to listen to others and assimilate ideas. The elephant’s trunk has the large operating range representing the human mind to be strong enough to face the ups and downs of the world apart from being delicate to explore the subtle realms of the inner world.

The wisdom and emotion aspects are represented by the two tusks where the broken left tusk symbolizes the idea of conquering emotions with wisdom to attain perfection. The elephant eyes possess natural deceptiveness which allows perceiving objects to be bigger than what they really are.

The god’s omnipresent and omnipotent aspects are represented by the four arms.

The left side of the body symbolizes emotion and the right side symbolizes reason. An axe in the upper left hand and a lotus in the upper right hand signify that in order to attain spiritual perfection, the worldly attachments should be cut by conquering emotions and live like a lotus remaining in water but not being affected by it. The Laddus represents that god gives wealth and prosperity to his devotees. The lower right hand in a blessing pose signifies that Ganesha always blesses his devotees.

The human body with yellow and red clothes symbolizes the purity, peace and truthfulness in the activity of the world. Big belly represent the capacity to face and digest all good and bad experiences of life.

The mouse at the feet of the god indicates a perfect person who has conquered his ego. The mouse gazing at the Laddus, but not consuming them, denotes a purified or controlled ego which can live in the world without being affected by the worldly temptations.
